Metabolic Balance Diet

The name Metabolic Balance Diet is becoming more and more common. Strictly speaking, this is not a diet, but rather a concept.

But what exactly does this concept include? How does Metabolic Balance work? And what about successes? We have taken a closer look at all this!

What is the Metabolic Balance Diet?

As already mentioned, this is not so much a diet as a comprehensive nutritional concept. This is well adapted to the individual metabolism. What is necessary for this? An individual nutritional plan developed in cooperation with a consultant.

The concept itself goes back to the internist and nutritionist Wolf Funfack and food technology engineer Silvia Bürkle. These have developed Metabolic Balance in 2002 – and since then they have enjoyed great popularity.

How Does The Metabolic Balance Diet Work?

As mentioned above, it all starts with a personal nutrition plan, which is developed together with an advisor.

The aim of this plan is to reduce the fat deposits, increase vitality and well-being until old age. In the meantime, the nutrition plan is also available online after a detailed preliminary discussion. The consultation itself is then carried out online or by telephone.

Diet Forms Metabolic Balance: What else is there to know?

One of the mainstays of this diet is the insulin problem. There is a good reason for this: In western cultures, too many carbohydrates are generally consumed. As a result, the blood sugar level fluctuates very frequently, skyrockets and then falls again. This in turn triggers ravenous hunger attacks. And the risk of obesity is constantly increasing.

We would like to illustrate this to you once again:

  • After eating the carbohydrates, they are converted into a sugar called glucose.
  • The pancreas then releases insulin.
  • The reason: Sugar should be brought to the cells so that they can extract their energy from the sugar.
  • If there is now a constant oversupply, the cells no longer have to fall back on the fat as an additional energy supplier.
  • The fat is therefore no longer degraded but stored.
  • Civilization diseases such as obesity, high blood lipid levels and diabetes can develop.

What Is The Principle Of Metabolic Balance Diet?

A total of 36 blood values and personal data are determined with regard to dislikes, preferences, intolerances and illnesses. Based on this, a PC program is now developing a personal nutrition plan.

However, it is not possible to find out more about this, as the inventor treats his “secret formula” in strict confidence and does not pass it on to third parties.

It is only known that certain foods are selected on the basis of the data obtained. These are then to contribute to the harmonisation of the hormone balance and metabolism.
What are the phases in the Metabolic Balance Diet?

All in all, this concept consists of four phases:

Phase 1: the preparation phase
Phase 2: the strict conversion phase
Phase 3: the relaxed conversion phase
Phase 4: the maintenance phase

Phase 1 lasts a total of two days. During this time, the body should prepare itself well for the new form of nutrition. Therefore, similar to the beginning of fasting, the intestine is emptied completely. This is to prevent hunger attacks. The body also receives only light food, such as a half breakfast in the morning, a vegetable soup for lunch and steamed or raw vegetables in the evening. Another alternative: the person who is willing to lose weight only consumes one foodstuff for a whole day – such as rice, potatoes or vegetables.

In phase 2, strict conversions are called for. It lasts significantly longer: at least two weeks. And requires some discipline, just as a warning! During this time, eight dietary rules apply. Among other things, these determine how many meals can be eaten at what time and at what intervals.

In addition, only those foods may be consumed that are also included in the personal nutrition plan.
While for some people, cottage cheese and apples are on the menu, others should only use blueberries and edam.

A total of three meals are consumed per day. These are low in carbohydrates and rich in protein. In plain language, this means: There is a lot of fish, plenty of eggs and some dairy products as well as lean meat on the menu! Vegetables are an excellent side dish. Typical saturation supplements such as rice, potatoes or pasta are prohibited.

  • The quantities are very limited.
  • This is accompanied by a lower number of calories.
  • The result: you lose weight well.

Once this phase has been successfully completed, phase 3 will come to an end: now the participants can test how they react to certain foods. For example, one of the three meals allows more carbohydrates such as rice or noodles. And: On the so-called “cheating days”, the strict quantity specifications may also be ignored! Even alcohol is allowed – if it is beer or wine.

However, you should be careful to move yourself sufficiently.
So find a sport that you really enjoy (!).

If this phase is also over, phase 4, the last one in the Metabolic Balance Diet, comes. This so-called maintenance phase is now intended to ensure its success. There is no time limit. Rather, the longer the better.

The fourth phase is the “conservation phase”, which is intended to ensure the success achieved so far: the duration of this phase is not limited. If you have a few pounds too much on your ribs at some point, you can simply return to the “strict phase” for a few days, according to Funfack.

Metabolic Balance Diet: Nutritional plan and other refinements

As already mentioned, this concept is based on an individual food selection. But that’s not all: there are still eight – quite simple – rules to be followed. They are valid from phase 2 onwards and we would like to introduce them to you here:

Three meals are allowed per day – no more and no less.
These should be taken at least five hours apart. With good reason: snacks and snacks would disrupt the metabolic processes. And that in turn encourages ravenous hunger attacks.

Each meal should not exceed one hour.
And start with one or two bites of protein. This enables digestive enzymes to work better and break down proteins. Afterwards, the “bad” carbohydrates are consumed – and this stimulates the production of insulin with a time delay. This prevents hunger attacks.
Only one type of protein is allowed at each meal. However, it should be a different type of protein for each meal.

You shouldn’t eat after 9:00.
You should also drink 35 ml of water per kilogram of body weight every day – spread over the entire day. This corresponds to approx. 2 to 3 litres per day – quite a lot! Coffee and tea are only allowed shortly after meals.
1 apple should be eaten per day.

What are the Metabolic Balance experiences?

Participants had mixed experiences with this nutritional concept. One point that was repeatedly criticized was that this diet is not really favorable: The examination as well as the nutrition plan cost a proud 360 euros. And depending on the consultant’s additional services, this price may go up.

In addition, experts doubt that the proven “experts” of metabolic Balance GmbH have undergone a really good training. To be able to call oneself a counsellor, it is sufficient to attend a training course. Whether this is really sufficient for a competent nutritional consultation is once again questionable.

Does the Metabolic Balance Diet Work?

We like the fact that the food varies a lot in the various phases. So no boredom arises and it remains beautifully varied. For example, during the second phase in the morning there is a banana and 200 g natural yoghurt. At noon, 125 g of poultry and 130 g of spinach land on the table. In the evening, 135 g lean ham and 150 g tomatoes are on the menu.

Especially this phase is very strict. And that makes it especially difficult for couples to cook together. And invitations from abroad are also a more or less big problem! This of course requires some discipline. You should be aware of this!

Diet after blood values – what do the experts say?

Experts see the Metabolic Balance diet as a whole critical. They point out that the theories on which this concept is based are not scientifically founded. Neither the various theories regarding proteins nor the blood test. Furthermore, there is no scientific evidence that there is any connection between weight loss and the blood values determined.

The dietary rules established are also questionable overall. The weight reduction is attributed by the experts primarily to the calorie restriction.

Metabolic Balance Diet – What is our conclusion?

The Metabolic Balance Diet is based on a low-calorie mixed diet, which contains a lot of protein and few carbohydrates. You can lose a lot of kilos with it. Other dietary approaches have clearly shown this!

However, this concept requires plenty of discipline – especially during the second phase. Even the long breaks between meals should not be underestimated! Not to mention the fact that this program costs a lot of money. And the theories are not necessarily shared by scientists. Therefore, this diet form is to be enjoyed rather with caution!
